Infectious Agents

Microbes get a bad rap mainly because of infectious agents.  Although the 2,000 or so known infectious agents make up a small fraction of the microbial population, these pathogenic microbes nevertheless have gained notoriety for their devastating effects on human populations throughout our history.  Despite advances in the development of vaccines and antibiotics, their continued presence is due to our struggle to keep pace with the ever-changing types of pathogens that emerge, and the widespread outbreaks that take hold of populations large and small.  The posts categorized under infectious agents will spotlight these micro-organisms and discuss their overall structure, route of transmission, and the related conditions they cause.
